Does one really need anti-virus software?

i think you can only get virus' if your naive - downloading silly stuff ccgens, xbox code gens just really dumb things like that. i've had my laptop for a year and ive never had any virus' although i check with malwarebytes every like 2 months. so do people really need stuff like norton, mcafee etc to slow your s*** down?
